Michael Patrick Whalen III passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family, September 11. Michael was born April 8, 1949 in Findlay, OH to Michael Patrick Whalen II and Janet Danz Whalen. His parents preceded him in death. He married Marcia Vincent Whalen August 10, 1991 and she survives. He is also survived by his children Matthew and Sasha, his grandchildren Parker and Delilah, as well as his sisters Patricia Whalen-Shaw and Mary Whalen, niece Jennifer Paulson and her children. Michael loved his extended family and cherished gatherings with them. He was always ready for a card game of Michigan Rummy and lots of laughter. He appreciated all the love and support he received from so many during his illness and was humbled by everyone's kindness. He graduated from Findlay High School in 1967. He earned his BA from Ohio University and a MA from the University of Detroit Mercy plus Philanthropy Certification through Indiana University. Growing up with a strong work ethic instilled by his parents, Michael began working at Superior Trim, a company founded by his father, when he was 16. In time he became the manager of the company. After selling Superior Trim, he changed career paths and went into philanthropy. He worked first at Rhodes State College as the Director of their Foundation then at Mercy College of Ohio as the Director of College Advancement. He retired in 2019.Michael's belief in the importance of sharing time and talent with others resulted in many years of volunteer work. He was proud to be in the first Hancock Leadership class. He was a Big Brother and later served on the Foundation Board for Children's Mentoring Connection. He was a founding member of CASA/GAL and served on their board of directors. He served on Parish Council at St. Michael. He was president of the Parish Council and also co-chaired the initial Planning Committee for the construction of the new church. A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, September 18, 1:00 pm at St. Michael Church with Monsignor Michael Hohenbrink officiating. 750 Bright Road Findlay, OH 45840. Visitation will be in the Narthex of the church before the funeral mass: 11:45-12:45. Interment will follow in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery.
