Leon C. Wood, 93, of Findlay, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2024 at Birchaven Village. He was born on December 5, 1930 in Concord, Massachusetts, to the late Ray A. and Alma E. (Stevens) Wood. On April 3, 1955, he married Sally P. Wood, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage before her passing on October 6, 2021.
Leon is survived by children Linda (Larry) Hamilton of Jeffersonville, Ohio; Laura (Lynn) Mercer of Findlay, Ohio; Donna Wood of Gahanna, Ohio and Russell (Ruth) Wood of Camden, Michigan. He is survived by nine grandchildren: Mark and Stephen Hamilton, Ben (Riley) Mercer, Jacob (Sarah) Mercer, Colin Mercer; David Kelley, Julia (Brandon) Houpt, Nathan (Madison) Wood and Ellen Wood. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Maverick, Maddox, Maksim, Malaki and Mason Mercer and Lily and Ella Mercer. Leon is also survived by his brother, Herbert, of Arizona. His siblings, Paul Wood, Virginia Waltz, Stuart Wood, and Hazel Ciarcia preceded him in death, as did his infant daughter, Louisa, and grandson, Edward Hamilton.
Leon proudly served his country in the Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts in1956 with a degree in accounting, and promptly moved to Findlay to begin working for Marathon Oil Company. Leon retired from Marathon in 1986 after working for them for 30 years.
Leon thoroughly enjoyed genealogy, researching his family back to descendants traveling to Massachusetts on the Mayflower. He was a proud member of the Mayflower Society. Leon also enjoyed bowling and was part of the Marathon Bowling team. He enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids activities and “helping” the coaches whenever he could. He tinkered with various woodworking projects and made many items that started as ideas without plans and ended up as unique and useful items. He was a former member of Howard United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was a member of the bell choir. He was a current member of St. Paul’s Church.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 2:00 p.m at St. Paul’s Church, 218 E. Sandusky St. in Findlay. Visitation for family and friends will be immediately prior to the service, from 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday. Internment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
