Obituary Service Details Condolences

E. Tom Child, 99, died at 5:41 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019. He was born in Findlay, Ohio on July 2, 1919 to the late D Earl and Anna (Blackford) Child. On February 25, 1950, Tom married Geraldine Ruth Wilson and she survives. Tom is also survived by his five daughters, Janet C. Chism, Sue A. Child, Patricia C. Graham, Mary A. Child and Nancy C. Moss. He is also survived by four grandsons, Martin and Hunter Chism, Nathan and Trey Graham, and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Moss. He was predeceased by two brothers, Rollin Blackford Child and Harold Latchaw Child, and two sisters, Abigail Elizabeth "Bette" Loyd, and Anna Margaret Sheaffer. Tom graduated in the Class of 1937 from Findlay High School and attended Ohio Wesleyan University and Ohio State University. He was third generation family ownership of Hancock Brick and Tile Company. He served his country in the U.S. Navy every day of WW II and was on the destroyer USS Cassin DD372 when she was destroyed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He spent the remainder of the war on destroyers Caldwell DD605 and Patterson DD392. He held Life Memberships in PT Boats, Inc., Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, Great Lakes Historical Society, U.S. Naval Institute, American Legion, VFW, John Birch Society, Slocum Society, Western Lake Erie Historical Society, Rotary International 711 Club, National Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence Association (installations/consultant), Beaver Island Historical Society, NRA, the American Radio Relay League, the Planetary Society and the Humane Society. He also held memberships in the Great Lakes Cruising Club, Findlay Rotary Club, Bay View, MI Association of the United Methodist Church, Hancock Historical Museum, U.S. Power Squadrons, USS Liberty Veterans Association, Tin Can Sailors, USS Caldwell DD605 Association, USS Patterson DD392 Association, the Findlay Radio Club (ham operators), and Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2-4 on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Kirkpatrick-Behnke Funeral Home and also from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 4, at the Calvary Baptist Church, 2000 Broad Avenue, Findlay, OH 45840. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 4, at the church with pastor Gordon Dickson officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad.
