Ellen C. Stepnakowski, born 5/2/1930, was called to her eternal home Tuesday, Sept 8, at 1:57 a.m. after a long and courageous battle with Frontal-Temporal Dementia. She was the 8th child born to John and Johanna Donegan in Detroit, MI. She married Walter Michael Stepnakowski on 11/19/1955. They lived in Detroit, MI, Sterling, IL, Bedford, IN and Indianapolis, IN. Walter (Mike) died in 2000. Ellen attended St. Lukes Catholic Church in Indianapolis, IN for 25 years. Ellen was moved to Assisted Living in Fishers, IN in 2014, and to Findlay, OH in 2018 where she spent three months at The Heritage and 19 months at The Legacy.
She is survived by her children and their families: Walt Stepnakowski, Jr. (Lynn and son, Andrew), Maureen (Dave Hougland, and daughters, Amy, Lindsey (Creighton), and Emily (Gareth)), Marilyn (Phil Koenig and their sons, Nick (Emily) and Brett (Tricia)) and Maryellen (David Spradley and son, Dan) and 4 great-granddaughters and #5 is due Oct 2! She is also survived by one sister, Lucille Summers, Livonia, MI, and many nieces and nephews.
In 1976, Ellen attended Ivy Tech for LPN school. Ellen was the oldest in her class at Marion College, Indianapolis, and commuted from Bedford, IN living in the dorm M-Th and coming home after class on Friday for 2 years to complete her ADN in 1983 at the age of 52. She worked as an LPN and an RN at Bedford Medical Center. She and Mike retired to move to Indianapolis in 1988 to help care for Maureen's triplets. While in Indy, she worked the polls on Election Day, and was active in their neighborhood organization. She enjoyed singing, working in her yard, going to the casino, and taking care of her grandchildren.
Per her wishes, Ellen was cremated. There will be no funeral. A Celebration of Ellen's Life will be held at a later date due to COVID. The family wishes to thank all who cared for mom at Allisonville Meadows, The Heritage and The Legacy. You are our heroes! Arrangements were handled by Kirkpatrick-Behnke Funeral Home.
