John D. Cooper, Sr., age 87 of Mt. Cory, passed away at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Mennonite Memorial Home in Bluffton, Ohio. John was born on October 17, 1931 at home in Findlay, Ohio on Garfield Avenue to the late Orville and Catharine (Dillon) Cooper.
John was a 1950 graduate of Findlay High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. After college he worked for V.F. Holderman Construction, working on interstate 75. In October 1957 he started working at Cooper Tire and Rubber and retired on May 31, 1989 as the Cooper Maintenance Foreman.
John was married to Marcella Mae "Peg" Goebel on June 4, 1955 in Angola, Indiana. She preceded him in death on June 20, 1994. John married Beverley Gault Corwin on July 20, 1996 and she survives.
John is survived by his wife Beverley; his children: Carla Foster of Arlington, Ohio, Gregory A. (Debbie) Cooper of Mt. Cory, Ohio, Ronald D. (Jennifer) Cooper of Highland, Indiana, and Jeffrey D. (Connie) Cooper of Rawson, Ohio; a daughter-in-law Pamela Cooper; siblings: Barbara Hovis of Findlay, Ohio, Sue (Charlie) Swisher of Findlay, Ohio, Evelyn (Richard) Bartchlett of Findlay, Ohio, James (Sharon) Cooper of Findlay, Ohio, and Jeanne (Terry) Bowen of Leesburg, Indiana; 17 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; and 8 great great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by sons John D. Cooper, Jr., and Stephen L. Osborn; a sister Elva Peterson; two brothers-in-law Richard Hovis and James Peterson; granddaughter Melissa Stacey; and a great grandson Icarus Apollo Cooper.
John enjoyed fishing, especially at Long Lake in Michigan. He enjoyed deer hunting and organized the Wednesday Night Fish fry for his hunting friends. He also enjoyed woodworking, and was an all around fix it man.
John was a member of the former East Foulke Avenue Church of God in Findlay, now the Stonebridge Church of God, where he was a Sunday School teacher, a Lay minister, and served on many committees.
John coached Midget Football and was a First Aid instructor for Cory Rawson Midget Football. He was also a Cory Rawson Football announcer and member of the Cory Rawson Athletic Boosters.
John was a member of the Mt. Cory Fire Department, and while he worked at Cooper Tire and Rubber he was a member of the Cooper Fire Brigade. He served as the Village Council President for Mt. Cory, served on the bicentennial committee, and was a member of the board of public affairs. He was also a member of the Bluffton American Legion and the Cooper Old Timers.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at KIRKPATRICK-BEHNKE FUNERAL HOME, 500 Lima Avenue, Findlay, Ohio. A funeral service will begin following the visitation at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with John's son, Rev. Ron Cooper officiating.
Burial will follow at Clymer Cemetery in Union Township with Military Rights performed by the Bluffton American Legion and Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad.
