Mike "Doc" Slough, 72, born July 1, 1946 in Findlay, died Monday, January 21, 2019. He was a lifelong Findlay resident and public servant. Mike grew up a teacher's son, raising crops and cattle on a north end farm off Melrose Ave. He was a part of the first graduating class in the new Findlay High School in 1964. He was senior class president and a member of a fearsome FHS defensive backfield. With pro football aspirations, he attended Mount Union College to play football and ultimately graduated with a B.S. in Education from Ohio Northern University in 1969. He later earned his M.S in Education from Bowling Green State University.
With his new diploma in hand, he was a mid-year teaching replacement at New Bremen High School where he made lifelong teaching and card playing friends. The following year in 1970 he met and married his wife of 49 years Mary, they raised two sons Eric and Curtis. In 1970 he also had the opportunity to return to Findlay High School where he began a 33 year career as a social studies and government teacher. Doc Slough patrolled the FHS sidelines and court sides for 29 years. There wasn't a sprained ankle or taped finger that didn't receive his attention for nearly three decades. He was inducted into the Hancock County Athletic Hall of fame in 2004 and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame in 2001.
Coinciding with his teaching career, Mike served as president of the Findlay youth baseball for many years. He has served on the City of Findlay Parks and Recreation board for more than twenty years and helped develop many of the city's green spaces. Upon his retirement, he threw himself in to public service and served as the Ward 1 city councilman for ten years. Mike was a member of the Elk's and Moose service organizations. He was past president of the Y-Condo Club association and enjoyed attending many Findlay Power and Sail Squadron events.
Mike and his family spent many summers swimming and fishing at their summer residence in Port Clinton, OH. Mike could navigate anywhere on the western basin of Lake Erie looking for perch and walleye. He took great joy in watching his grandchildren play on the beach and splash in the waves from their lakeside retreat.
