Richard A. Mestrez, 76 of Findlay passed away at 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center in Findlay. Richard was born on November 1, 1942 in Seattle, Washington. Richard married Jodie Cecil on June 28, 1980. They were later divorced but remained friends.
Richard is survived by a daughter, Chelsey Mestrez (fiance Brian McClure) of Findlay; a granddaughter, Bailey Thomas; a brother, Robert (Mary) Mestrez of South Carolina; and a sister, Susan Mestrez of Fostoria. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert E. and Patricia (French) Mestrez, a brother, Chuckie Mestrez and a sister, Sandra Mestrez.
He was a United States Marine Corps veteran.
In 1989 Richard became the very first person to receive a heart transplant at the former Medical College of Ohio, now the University of Toledo Medical Center.
Richard was a loving father, grandfather and friend to everyone he met. He had a great sense of humor and could put a smile on anyone's face. Richard enjoyed sports, particularly baseball. He was a fan of the Cleveland Indians. He also loved cars and motorcycles, he had a Harley Davidson at one time but was forced to give it up due to his health. Richard spent his free time watching sports games and westerns on TV. He was always there to help family and friends whenever they needed him. Richard's warm heart, his big smile and his way to lighten up the mood with his sense of humor will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2019 at KIRKPATRICK-BEHNKE FUNERAL HOME, 500 Lima Ave Findlay, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 24 at the funeral home with the Rev. Ruth Whitaker officiating. Burial will be private.
