Joe Harold Alexander, 91 of Port Clinton, Ohio passed away at 12:37 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at the Bridge Hospice Care Center in Findlay. Joe was known to many as Mr. Terrific. He was born in Findlay, Ohio on May 5, 1929 to the late George T. and Gayle (Moyer) Alexander. He married Jean M. Smith on May 21, 1949 and she survives.
Joe is survived by six children, Lee Ann (Melvin) Karhoff of Findlay, OH, Marsha Curry of Stow, OH, George (Nancy) Alexander of Arlington, OH, Tracy (Thomas) Flavell of Melbourne, Florida, Matthew V. Alexander of Charlotte, North Carolina, Margaret (Kevin) Karhoff of Findlay, OH.
He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Kelly Roberts, Brent Curry, Beth (Nathaniel) Hagey; Scott (Rachel) Flavell, Andrew (Jessica) Flavell, Melissa (Andrew) Harris; Tiffany (Nathan) Riker, Lindsey (Aaron) Walker, Joe (Maegan) Alexander, Matt (Megan) Alexander, Parker Alexander, Kelsey Alexander; Jeffrey Karhoff and Rachel Karhoff; 16 great granchildren and four great great grandchildren.
Joe was preceded in death by four siblings Don (Helen) Alexander, Peg (Fred) Weising, Jeanne (Walter) Mueller, and Barbara (Ned) Chatelain, and son-in-law Michael Curry.
Joe was happiest spending time in his workshop producing an assortment of items for family and friends, or cutting and splitting wood. He especially enjoyed crafting shaker boxes and carriers. Joe was a 1947 graduate of Findlay High School. He served in the 37th Division of the Ohio National Guard for 11 years. This unit was activated during the Korean War.
Joe retired after 40 years of association with Parker True Value Lumber Company where he last served as the President and general manager.
Joe and his wife Jean served as foster parents for a number of years. He was a member and past chairman of the Salvation Army board and was a member of the Findlay Rotary and board member of the Hancock Historical Museum. He served on the Safety Town board and was a volunteer and board member for the Wide World Shoppe in Port Clinton.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Findlay, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton, OH and Our Lady of Grace church in Palm Bay, FL. Joe sang in the Memorial Choirs in Port Clinton and Florida. At St. Michael Church in Findlay he was on the Parish Council, was active in the Cursillo and precatecumenate programs, was a communion distributor, and after he retired he made thousands of rosaries for missions. He and his wife also traveled for many years throughout the country with their miniatures business.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 750 Bright Road, Findlay OH. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. Kirkpatrick-Behnke Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic, masks and social distancing are required.
